Persuasive Writing Activity #1
Imagine that it is the year 1912. You have been asked by your good
friend Alfred Wegener, a German scientist, to do him a very important
favor. He has asked you to write a letter to the National Geographic
Society to convince them to take a serious look at Alfreds
hypothesis on continental drift and possibly fund explorations
to support his idea.
Directions: Write a letter that contains enough evidence to convince
the National Geographic Society that Alfreds hypothesis is
valid and worthy of investigation?
An effective writer will consider the following points:
-List and describe types of Fossil evidence
-Geographical similarities -include drawings/diagrams
-Climatic and geological evidence
-Site examples of evidence
For your writing task, you will have the opportunity to follow all of
the steps of the writing process: prewriting, writing a first draft,
revising and editing your first draft, and writing a final draft.
My writing will be most effective if I have a good design. In
other words, I used interesting, thoughtful, and essential
information to communicate ideas about my topic.

used paragraphs
used transitions to connect ideas
have an interesting style
used words that helps the reader understands my ideas
follow conventions in writing. In other words, I
used complete sentences
used capitalizations and punctuations correctly

Persuasive Writing Activity #2
The people of Pierce County are in the middle of a heated debate
between the housing developers and the Pierce County Emergency
Response Team. The developers are wanting to build homes close to the
Mount Rainer National Park boundary. The PCERT is opposed to this
development.
Directions: Write a newspaper article that supports the PCERTs
position against developers.
An effective writer may consider the following points:
-What kind of structure is Mount Rainer and why is it in that
location?
-include drawings/diagrams or explanations associated
with this kind of plate boundary
-What evidence could you provide to convince the people of Pierce
County to side with you?
-Describe the possible hazardous effects represented by this kind of
geologic structure?
