Math Lab: Course Syllabus

This laboratory class is designed for students to work independently to improve their individual mathematics skills. It will provide students time and support for their secondary math education. Students will be provided assistance in their current math courses and extra preparation or intervention on other math topics. WASL preparation will be included in the course and students will be asked to write to math prompts weekly.

 

Course Requirements:

  1. Completion of all assignments in your current math course(s).
  2. Complete 1 individual skill s unit on: Pre-Algebra Basics (2nd quarter), Operations with Fractions (3rd quarter), Ratios and Proportions (4th quarter). Students must track and record their progress on each unit.
  3. Weekly Online Mathematics: Students must complete online topic reviews that are assigned by the instructor. The students must record all progress and completed web sites in a journal that will be turned into the instructor prior to each grading period.
  4. Complete a weekly WASL practice session.
  5. Full participation in math enrichment activities as provided by the instructor.

 

Journal: Requirements:

  1. A written summary of your week’s progress in the individual skill units and enrichment activities.
  2. A record of your online work including scores on quizzes and the web site visited.
  3. WASL writing activities.
  4. A weekly reflection piece on your progress in your math course. What concepts presented this week in your math class do you feel you have a good understanding of? Which concepts are giving you some difficulty? Why? What can you do to resolve your lack of understanding?

 

Quarterly Grading Criteria:

  1. Participation in all in enrichment, intervention, and online activities during the week.
  2. Course Journal (See Journal Requirements above)
  3. Successful completion of the individual skill s unit
  4. A summary chart or graph that illustrates your progress in the skills unit.

 

Weekly Routine:

The first part of each class day will be spent finishing up current and missing assignments the students’ math classes. Students will be asked to show their completed assignments to the instructor prior to moving on to other activities.

 

Monday:  WASL prompt or practice WASL problems

Tuesday: Individual skill s unit and online math problems

Wednesday: Online Math Activities

Friday:  Journal Reflection and Enrichment Activities
