Outdoor Education: Course 1: Introduction to the Outdoors

Project Description: In this project you are going to purchase enough food for a summer hiking trip in the Cascade Mountains. You will work with a partner to “buy” the right type and amount of food that will allow you to complete the entire trip.

Scenario:

You and a friend are going on a 6 night, 7 day backpacking trip. You will be hiking with a full pack for about 10 miles a day.

You must plan for a variety of trail and weather conditions. The more difficult the trail is (the amount of energy you use will increase) thus requiring you to eat more.

The weather can also be a factor. The cooler it is the more food you will need.

Requirements:

  1. A complete list of food that costs no more then $75.00
  2. The weight of the food cannot be more then 81bs.
  3. You must have at least one extra day/night portion.
  4. Write a menu for the entire trip. Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner.
  5. What might you drink besides water?
  6. Presentation: You can use any type of format for presenting your information you would like. Use MS Word, Publisher, Power Point, or make a pictorial collage.
