EARTH SCIENCE:
Water Cycle:
Key elements are evaporation and transpiration, groundwater, condensation,
and precipitation.
-Be able to draw the Water cycle.
Rivers:
River formation: Tributaries from all over the watershed >
unite to form the river.
runoff>gully>widens over time>creates a channel>=river.
River evolution: Youthful> Mature (contains meanders and maybe an oxbow lake > Old rivers.
Stream Erosion:
Key terms:
Stream load- the total amount of sediments carried by the stream
a) suspended load- sediments that are carried,(do not sink)
b) bed load- sediments and rocks that are moved along (greatest
erosional effect)
c) dissolved load- material that are dissolved-as ions or molecules
discharge-amount of water traveling over a particular area at
a particular time.
gradient- steepness of the slope.
Stream Deposition
Delta formation- as a stream enters a body of water (ocean, a
gulf, a lake) its velocity drops dramatically and the load begins
to settle out in the form of a delta.
Alluvial fan formation-when the gradient of a stream lessens dramatically, its velocity drops and the load may be deposited as an alluvial fan.
Flood plain-the part of a valley floor usually covered in a flood.
