Atmosphere and Hydrosphere (oceans)

Project (samples)

Team Projects:

Teams must fill out a team planning form for each class day.

Newspaper: I would divide it into several sections (name of section TBD). I would either have a separate section for the lab experiments or include them in one of the topic sections (i.e. if the experiment was on air pressure I might include it in with the section on air pressure).

Example of the topics that I would include are:

Composition of the atmosphere-characteristics of the different layers and component gases. (How does atmosphere change in composition, density, pressure, and temperature as you move from the surface to the outer limit.)

Sun's energy (thermal energy)- what happens to it when it reaches the earth. Where does most of it strike the earth and why? What effect does this create?

Convection: Small Scale-sea/land, mountain/valley breezes and Grand Scale-global wind patterns and ocean currents.
Coriolis effect: global wind patterns or belts and ocean currents

Cloud formation: relate the concepts of saturation, dew point, and condensation.

Air masses: temperature/density and pressure relationship= high and low pressure areas (cyclones and anticyclones)

Weather-occurs at the boundaries of air masses (fronts)- modified by topography, global winds, ocean currents. and location of land masses.

Tides: how are they produced and what kind of effect do they have on marine life

The ocean floor's topography is varied and represents the top of thin oceanic plates.

Describe how energy moves through water in the form of a wave (mechanical waves)

Magazine: I would divide the magazine into article names (name of article TBD- but something like). I would either have a separate section for the lab experiments or include them in one of the topic sections (i.e. if the experiment was on air pressure I might include it in with the section on air pressure).

"Bill Nye" video-divide the video into a series of short "shoots" or segments that focus on the above topics. Before each segment- include an introduction. Remember that you have to include the experiments. They can be in the video or just written up and handed in.

Poster choice- I suggest that you make a poster for each of the topic. Include on each poster diagrams/pictures/photographs that support that topic.

Individual Science Projects:

The best topic that I can think of would be convection. It is responsible for the global circulation in the atmosphere and the ocean. It transfers heat from the equator the poles.

Other topics that I suggest are:

coriolis effect
cloud formation and types of weather
weather types and severe storms
tidal action and the demands on marine life

Weather Journal: see form.
