In this unit, students will have a choice on how they would like to learn the material necessary to meet the learner outcomes. Once they have made their choice, they are obligated to see it through to completion. The time frame for this unit is approximately 6 weeks.
During class time, I will be providing them with background information and activities designed to prepare the students to master the desired outcomes.
I will also provide them time for research (computers, library, other) and time to do much of the work in class. I can also provide some hardware for in class experiments.
When the unit is completed, all students will be assessed on how well they mastered the outcomes. The assessment may vary, depending on which pathway the student chose. It could be a written test or a presentation. It could be a series of wasl-like scenario's that would require the student to draw on their knowledge of the atmosphere and the hydrosphere to answer or solve the questions associated with the scenarios.
The product is itself may be the assessment.
Students may choose one of the following pathways to achieve mastery of the outcomes:
(1) Team Projects: (choose 1) (3 or 4 students)
a. Produce a "newspaper" or magazine that covers
the major topics and learner outcomes.
b. Make a "Bill Nye" type of instructional video (2
segments: 1 on the atmosphere and hydrosphere)
c. Produce a 30 minute news presentation that covers the topics
and learner outcomes.
d. Poster display with written narratives that support the concepts
presented on the posters.
(2) Individual Project:
Requirements for all pathways:
1. Two lab demonstrations or experiments:
2. Team members must have a time sheet that states who did what part and how much time they spend on it.
