On October 18, 1998, interviewed Mr. William ( Bill ) Harding
Jr, he gave me this
information. His wives name is Nancy Harding and his parent's
names are William
Harding senior and
Amanda Harding. His childrens' names are Jim and Lynda.
His son
now lives in the in the house that William Jr was born in. He
was born in 1929,
November, 23. He has lived here all of his life.
This paragraph is about his orchard. He has 90 acres of orchard.
In his orchard he
has these kinds of apples; red delicious, goldens, romes, and
wine saps. His orchard was
first planted in 1914 by the Land Company. The apple shed was
built in 1920. The apple
shed was in process for 63 years; they packed their own apples
in that shed for 63 years
until they had to shut it down. Now they bring their apples to
Custom Apple at Brewster.
His father was on the first board of directors for Trout. The
orchard has been in the family
since 1915. William Jr went to school at Manson until the 6th
grade then went to Chelan and
graduated from Chelan. His father was working for the Land Company.
The first orchard
was planted in 1913 by the Land Company. His father would work
the land for the Land
Company in exchange for land. His father bought 10 acres from
the Land Company. After
that he was given land credits for the work he did. His father
came from Tacoma and brought six pigs. He stayed in Entiat the
first night. Then the second night he stayed in Chelan. Then the
next day he bought enough wood to build a cabin. (This is in March,
1915). Then they built the house that he was raised in which was
rebuilt in 1952.
In 1917 and 1918 there was a strip a concrete from Manson to Chelan which was the highway. It was a one-way road. In 1927 they raised the lake about 20 feet. The water covered the old highway so a new one was built, which is where the highway is today. when his dad first came here, there were only two cars in the Chelan area. The gas had to be shipped from Seattle by rail. Before they raised the lake, the old highway was below Rocky Point. His dad was driving to Chelan in the winter and slipped on the ice and drove over the bank, since in the winter the lake is down his father started driving on the old road to Chelan. That is what Mr. Harding told me about the past.
