Canoe Creek

by Bass Ketball

This is how Canoe Creek got named. One day,two gentlemen were backpacking down this creek with a horse. One of the gentleman's name was Mr.Domke and he brought a friend. The horse's name was Prince. One night Prince got lost and he fell off of a cliff into a creek. So they called it Prince Creek. The gentlemen walked down to the next creek. They decided to stop walking, becuase they were tired. They made a canoe out of a log then they paddled down lake. Now the creek's name is Canoe Creek.

In the 1900's the Pilz family homesteaded in Canoe Creek. They were the first family to homestead in Canoe Creek.Mr. Pilz worked away from home. While Mrs. Pilz raised and tought the kids. The house burnt down in the 1920's and was rebuilt a little while after the fire.

The Morehead family came to Manson from Oklahoma. They came here becuase they heard about the soil and how good it was to raise crops. My great great granpa Dwight Morehead was born in Oklahoma. He was born in a little place called Blackwell.Blackwell is probably not there anymore.

My great grandpa Glen Morehead walked the flumes. The flumes were an irigation system that travels by gravity. Some of his dutys were to check for leaks, dead animals, and tree limbs. He checked the flumes so it would flow. His routes were up behind Manson on Grade Creek road.He was approximatly paid ten cince for walking the flumes.

My grandpa Ellis Morehead worked at the old lumber mill.He only worked there for one summer. He cut wood pieces for the apple boxs. The mill started back in the 1930's and shut down in the 1960's.My grandpa worked at the old mill becuase he needed a job and he had just got back from the Airforce.
